Electronics are magnets for dust, dirt and grimy fingerprints. So how do you keep your delicate electronic devices disinfected without damaging them? Isopropyl alcohol and a good microfiber cloth!
The most common disinfectant used in hospitals and in the manufacturing of electronics and medical devices, isopropyl alcohol is effective at killing germs. Because it evaporates almost immediately, it’s also the smartest substance to use on water-sensitive devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
Whether you choose 99% or 70% isopropyl alcohol, both concentrations will do the trick. However, 70% isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) has a higher water content and remains on surfaces slightly longer. This actually makes it better at disinfecting!
Before you start cleaning any electronic gear, it’s important to power down the device, remove any cases, unplug accessories, and even remove the battery if possible. Next, create a solution of 70% isopropyl or rubbing alcohol and 30% water. Then, find a microfiber cloth that won’t shed fibers inside your devices.
When cleaning electronics, less is more. Spray your alcohol/water solution on a cloth (not directly on your device) and gently wipe the surface. You can also use pre-moistened disinfecting electronic wipes, which can be found online or in some retail locations. In both cases, remember to keep moisture to a minimum!
For getting into the cracks and crevices of your electronics, you may want to use pressurized air and follow up with a cotton swab around edges or buttons.
After you’ve safely disinfected your devices, you can get back to streaming, searching, and scrolling germ-free!
